Concrete Paint Products You Can Use for Your Concrete Floor

Using the term concrete paint, strictly speaking, is a misnomer when it comes to describing the coloring compounds used for concrete floors. They are actually water-based acrylic stains or dyes specifically designed for concrete surfaces. They penetrate the porous surfaces achieving permanent coloring effects ranging from semi-translucent, opaque and metallic tints. Concrete Paint also breathes out trapped moisture beneath the porous surface, preventing blisters and discoloration of the topical color.

Water-based acrylic stains
These are usually a mix of acrylic pigments and polymers that penetrate down deep on porous concrete floors top achieve a permanent color. Paint manufacturers offer a wide range of colors for water-based stains which includes black and white, metallic tints and other standard colors. The color effects of this type of Concrete Paint range from the very opaque to glossy translucent that varies from one manufacturer to another.

Concrete dyes
These dyes are chemically non-reactive unlike water-based stains which react with the concrete floor’s calcium hydroxide content. They achieve the lasting coloring effect by due to their much smaller particle size permitting an easier and better color penetration to porous surfaces. There are two types of concrete dyes namely water-based dye that usually produces a marbling effect and solvent- based dye for those who want a more uniform color effect.

Tinted sealers
Many are using tinted sealers for the dual purpose of being a sealing compound for concrete and a floor coloring method. This coloring option benefits those who want more subtle color effects for their concrete floors like a semi-transparent finish. This method is also excellent for those who want to enhance existing concrete floor coloring and for color-correction purposes. You can also apply color tints to the regular, clear solvent and water based commercial sealers. You just have to consult paint professionals to teach you exactly how to do it.

Some other considerations
You have to expect that color variation would likely occur when using water-based acrylic stains or concrete dyes. If you have a specific color or hue in mind, ask a professional for photos of finished floor jobs and color swatches or better yet, ask for a sample of the color you want achieve so that you’ll know what to expect. Also, be sure to make the concrete floor fully prepared before applying Concrete Paint. It should be free of pre-existing paints, grease and curing compounds that will otherwise greatly affect the adherence of the specific Concrete Paint you use on your floor.
