Ways to Write a Creative Title For eBay Products

What’s in a title? Everything if you want more people to click on your product listing at eBay! While the title for this article isn’t that creative, it doesn’t need to be. Knowing your audience is one of the first lessons. If we’re giving that information out here in the introductory paragraph, just imagine what the rest of the article is going to be like. In all seriousness, writing a good title for your eBay product listing can increase your clicks, and possibly your bids and overall profit. Sound good? Let’s begin.

Research and Recon

Whether you want to imagine yourself as Lewis and Clark exploring brand new places (listing categories on eBay) or you see yourself as a top secret spy scoping out the competition, doing proper research before writing any titles is a good idea for many reasons. As you scan the landscape – your competition – look for similarities. Also, see what stands out to you. If you notice a listing that makes you want to click, write it down. We’re not going to copy other listings exactly – that’s not creative at all – but writing down good examples can jump start many great title ideas of your own.

Prepare to Brainstorm

After you’ve done your recon and taken good notes – however you take notes – it’s time to get down to business and start scratching out your own product titles for items you have listed on EBay. It doesn’t really matter if you write them in pen, pencil, crayon, use a laptop, netbook, or even peck them into your cellphone. The point is to get the ideas down. Don’t hold back. Make slight variations on product titles you like. Here are some things to remember during this stage of the process.

  • Be Creative – Having a healthy dose of creativity is important for clever copywriting that makes readers want to click through to the product. You don’t want to by too creative (to the point no one understands you), but a little creativity in a product title at eBay can go a long, long way in increasing your sales. Sometimes being creative means being different than everyone else. (If there’s a needle hidden in this haystack of words, that is it!)
  • Be Concise – They say Ernest Hemingway once won a shortest short story competition with the following; “For sale. Baby shoes. Never used.” Minimalism at its best, but there’s a story there – a wealth of emotions in those six words. Obviously you’re going to want to evoke other emotions other than sadness (in most cases), but being brief is a good thing – especially for eBay product titles.

Post, Test, Refine

You should “always be testing” if you’re serious about increasing your eBay sales. Try different techniques with different products and track how well products do with the different titles. This takes time, but the information you gather is invaluable. Pretty soon, you’re going to have a pattern of the winning product title formula for whatever niche or niches you’re operating in.
